As a new mom there are a lot of things you can no longer do (well, you can do them you'll just never have the time to do them).
Things like watching a movie (uninterrupted!), getting your nails done (and letting them dry before baby wakes up) and going out (hahahaha) are virtually things of the past- luxuries you get to indulge in once in a while.
While it may take a little adjusting, it's not so bad- until you realize the one thing you can no longer do that you NEED and WANT to do more than anything.
Yes, I'm talking about sleep- something you will never do again until your child is married with kids of their own.
Now it's not just those early months, when the baby is waking up every 3 or 4 hours that we're talking about.
Although that can be a brutal time- caffeine anyone? you know it's temporary and will pass.
No, I'm talking about stay in bed until 9 A.M. sleep, curling up and taking a nap on a rainy day sleep or my favorite, I'm sleeping because I can sleep.
Sorry, but those blissful, deep, peaceful sleeps are just a memory in your rear-view mirror now because you have a little angel who is anything but when you want to sleep.
Even when your child is old enough to understand you need to take a nap or don't feel good they will NOT let you rest. There will be fingers in your eyes or crashing noises to startle you awake and keep you that way.
Even if they are good, it is impossible to completely shut out the world and rest when you know your 6 year-old is alone in the living room "watching TV" because odds are once your snoring he or she will be doing everything except watching TV.
And for those of you thinking dad can handle the baby/babies while you catch up on some zzz's, I will tell you now it will never work. Even if he has everything under control you will be too worried to really sleep and enjoy it.
So next time you feel like curling into bed and can't, take comfort in the fact that even though your sacrificing for your precious lil one, one day down the road you'll be dead and then you'll really sleep well :)
