It is every parents nightmare: you send your child off to daycare and something goes wrong. That's just what happened to a single-mom of two young boys in Texas who suffered severe sunburn during a daycare field trip. The boys ended up with 2nd and 3rd degree burns and are currently hospitalized. According to reports the daycare said it ran out of sunblock and that the boys, ages 7 & 5, refused to wear shirts while outdoors. Police are currently investigating while many debate who is at fault.
While the daycare may or may not be legally responsible, as a mom I find this appalling and felt compelled to write this post so parents who send their kids off to daycare can better protect them.
First of all, the fact that the daycare ran out of sunblock is no excuse. One, if you are going on a field trip you should check to make sure you are fully stocked with essentials- like sunblock!
Also, once they saw there was no more somebody should have run out to get some. To just say: "oh, well," and send them out is irresponsible at the least.
The daycare may not be responsible for buying lotions, but they ran out so apparently they do keep it on hand. Plus, they ARE responsible for the safety of the kids, so they should have either called the mom and asked her to bring some or said they would buy it and she could reimburse them.
Parents, my advice is to send your kids to daycare with their own bottle of lotion- or any other essential to make sure something like this doesn't happen.
That brings me to point number two: if the boys refused to put on shirts why were they allowed to go on the trip? Someone should have stayed behind with them or again, their mom should have been notified of the issue.
Parents, please leave specific instructions with your daycare provider so they know when to contact you. Sometimes decisions need to be made that aren't clear cut, so send a letter with your child asking to be called if any problems arise so you are involved.
As a mom my biggest piece of advice is to WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN and have the daycare keep it on file- and send anything you think they may need!
·if your child has allergies send Benadryl or an Epi-pen
·send extra clothes, sneakers, sunblock or anything else they may end up wanting for; daycares can get hot or cold so have supplies to keep your baby/child comfortable
·for babies who are under a year send extra formula, bottles, pacifiers, diapers so they don't run out or have an issue
It may seem like a lot of extra work, but when it comes to your child it's better to be safe than sorry. yes, your daycare center should be on top of these things, but sadly, that is not always the case.
Who do you think is responsible in this case? Share your thoughts with us, as well as any advice you might have below- we look forward to hearing from you!
